In 2009 I moved to Germany in order to be part of a research team – and then also to lead – an externally-funded project on the problem of the moral legitimation of violence during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) through to its completion in 2017.
My latest and most significant achievement has been the German Habilitation (and Privatdozent Dr., 2015) in History of Religions at the University of Frankfurt. As book this was published in February 2018 (Das „Ende des konstantinischen Zeitalters“ und die Modelle aus der Geschichte für Eine „neue Christenheit“. Eine religionsgeschichtliche Untersuchung).
In the meantime I have developed various seminars and lectured (postgraduate and undergraduate level) in several universities.
I live in Berlin, I am married and I have twin daughters.edit

In this essay the Bolognese historian of religions Pier Cesare Bori said his last words on the topic of Freud’s book Moses and Monotheism, which occupied him for many years. This new edition of the 1997 essay offers along with the text an introduction to contextualise both Freud’s book and Bori’s (several) previous essays. In his last efforts Bori set more clearly the accent on a material (historical) truth.

After offering a short survey of the history of the concept of Concord/Eintracht in the german area and in the modern age (ca. 1550-1800), the article focuses on the political models proposed, respectively, in the early romanticism by Novalis (Christianity or Europe, 1799) and at in the later romanticism by F. Schlegel (Concordia 1820). Both models are conservative, monarchical-corporative and catholic, but a closer examination and comparison reveals important differences, first and foremost on the political meaning of the idealised Middle Ages.

This paper is part of the D9 project (The Vatican and the Legitimization of the Physical Violence, Case Study of the Spanish Civil War) of the Cluster of excellence ‘Religion and Politics’ at the University of Münster. The bases of this study are the sources of the Vatican Archives. An analysis of how Pius XI made his o icial statement with regard to the standpoint of the Church in the Spanish Civil War on the 14th September 1936 has already been carried out (Zamagni 2013, Friede, Martyrium, Chris- tenheit). A short synopsis of his statement is given in order to understand the di erence of reasoning of the legitimization of the Spanish Civil War by the Spanish Bishops. This paper proves that the Holy See’s argumentation of the ‘Just War Theory’ was not taken into consideration by the Spanish Clergy. The legitimization of the war was provided by the bishops through the doctrine of the tyrannicide. Conclusively, in the common interest of supporting General Franco’s upheaval against the Republic, the Spanish bishops deemed a change of discoursive strategy as necessary in justifying the war.

The paper aims to set the reception of the Encyclical Mit brennender Sorge in the larger context of the declarations and the activities of the catholic Church towards Spain during the Civil War (1936-1939). This official doctrinal document and its reception in Spain can help to show – and assess – the attitude not only of the Vatican, but also of the Spanish Church in some of her main authorities, towards Germany, Nazism, Francisco Franco and the Falange Española in the first months of war (before the bombing of Gernika in April 1937).

The purpose of this paper is to provide an analysis of the Russian Philosopher Nikolaj A. Berdjaev’s main works during his time in Berlin from 1922 to 1924. Different editions, translations and articles of Berdjaev’s researches were examined in order to understand his conception of personalism and the human being as made in the image of God. Particular attention was paid to the essays of Berdjaev that were later collected as a book called „Das neue Mittelalter“. International literature from scholars who have written about Berdjaev was consulted in order to form an objective assessment of his theories and expose his central idea of the person being free also in matters of faith as created in the image of God. As a conclusion, this paper indicates that his concepts and ideas can be found and seen later on in the Declaration Dignitatis Humanae, approved by the Second Vatican Council 50 years ago.

The author takes Judaism, and in it the book of Exodus, as a necessary background to understand the thought of Michael Walzer. The passage on the Golden Calf was of crucial importance also in the religious experience of the New York philosopher as a young man. Zamagni quotes Sigmund Freud to ask: is it a true story? Walzer writes several times he is not interested in this particular aspect. But the plurality of the (also legal) sources of the Bible, the constitutive plurality of God’s names, does not jeopardise the reiterability of the model of the Exodus as a _plural_ political paradigm, on the contrary. The society is originated in that decisive (and violent) passage by the covenant, and going back would mean to go back to the Egyptians’ pots or even worse, to the worship of the Golden Calf.

The article deals with the perception of Silvio Berlusconi and Italy on German sources: in the historiographical literature, in essays and handbooks and on weekly and daily press for the most recent times. The attempt is to grasp, through a careful study of these sources in their formal and intellectual differences, a shared and settled german public opinion on Italy's last twenty years. Since this has much to do with stereotypes, in the conclusion a short discussion can be found, on some recurrent clichés regarding Italy: clowns, circus, buffoonery and the jester.

The short paper aims to remember the teaching of the late historian of religions of Bologna Pier Cesare Bori. His debated Risala of 2007 is closely compared to another important essay of 1995, where he at first formulated four key points on monotheisms. In conclusion, one brief remark is made on Jan Assmann’s theses about the political theology of monotheisms.

The article deals with a theologico-political critical concept, the «end of the Constantin-ian era», in connection with two commemorations, the 1700th anniversary of the Edict of Milan and the 50th of the Second Vatican Council, and an event, that of pope Ratzinger’s resignation. In 1961, the dominican friar Marie-Dominique Chenu revitalised that concept to contribute to the discussion on the council; nevertheless, the genealogy of that concept was deeper and meaningful in the history of theological concepts of the 20th century.

The paper presents the results of the research of Mario Liverani and Jan Assmann on the biblical book of the Exodus. Positive history based on evidence is the perspective of Liverani, an archaeologist. Assmann (also an archaeologist) in Herrschaft und Heil dwells on the “universal” meaning of the idea of the Covenant between the Nation and its God. The result is a strongly demythologized reading of the Exodus, bent to question some more general bases of Political theology.

The aim of the talk is to show, in three frames, some directions of the continental theology during Benedict XV’s papacy (1914-1922) and its endeavours. Three authors and three books were chosen, which resulted as a watershed each in its discipline. In 1917, The Idea of the Holy, by Rudolf Otto (1969-1937) was published. Not only his most famous book, but one of the most influencial of the comparative religious studies. A couple of years later, in 1919, the eminent calvinist theologian Karl Barth publishes his Epistle to the Romans, a book that closed the era of the liberal theology in favour of a dialectical theology. The last book, History of the Synoptic Tradition (1921) was itself a turning point for modern exegesis. One last, general question will then be asked: is some common pattern to be seen in these three books? Where was the continental theology going?

This speech aims to be the description and the critical assessment of a research method in which history of religions is understood through history of concepts. The history of religious concepts allows a certain philological objectivity (i.e. avoiding full-arbitrary or rhetorical reconstructions) and offers the possibility to follow the genesis and mutations of words and syntagmas through times and places: religious concepts are in themselves transcultural and diachronic vehicles. An article written by the French theologian Marie-Dominique Chenu on The End of the Constantinian Era was the starting point for the development of this research method. What did he mean by the syntagma The End of the Constantinian Era? Where did this idea evolve from and most importantly, why had it such a powerful effect on the Second Vatican Council? The example of Chenu will prove how a concept can have the ability to influence and modify reality: effecting matters and affairs, determining behavior of individuals, and showing a critical potential towards socio-political structures.

This paper is grounded within the project D9 (The Vatican and the Legitimization of the Physical Violence in the case-study of the Spanish Civil War) of the Cluster of excellence “Religion and Politics” at the University of Münster. An analysis of how Pius XI made his official statement with regard to the Spanish Civil War on the 14th September 1936 has already been carried out (Zamagni 2013, Friede, Martyrium, Christenheit). As such, this paper focuses on the next step, i.e. the assessment, on the basis of the sources of the Vatican Archives, of the reception of this statement in Spain – where evidently theologico-political stances already existed – and how it was reflected in and affected discourses as well activities of the Spanish clergy.
